Silence by Shusaku Endo

This is a great Christian novel about a time and place few of us probably think about—17th century Japan when a growing Christian population was cruelly persecuted and driven underground. This is the story of the Portuguese priest who came to serve and suffer martyrdom if need be. But he is completely unprepared for the kind of sacrifice he will be called upon to give.

What is a Poor Potsherd?

A potsherd, of course, is a piece of broken pottery and is used as a simile in the Bible.
