The Screwtape Letters and Screwtape Proposes a Toast by C. S. Lewis

The Screwtape Letters takes the point of view of a demon serving his master, Satan, whose job is to tempt a feckless Christian. He writes up periodic reports on his success or failure with his charge. Funny, biting, and oh, so true. The essay “Screwtape Proposes a Toast” was not in the original book, but is included here.

What is a Poor Potsherd?

A potsherd, of course, is a piece of broken pottery and is used as a simile in the Bible.
It is also found in this hopeful poem by G. M. Hopkins.
