Empire of the Summer Moon by S. C. Gwynne

The full title of this book, Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American History, gives you the summary. But if you think all Indian tribes were alike and all were at the crushing mercy of the American government, think again. The Comanches moved into Texas about the same time the Europeans arrived and their clash over the same land (occupied by other tribes) was epic. The Comanche may have been the best horse soldier the world has ever seen. And the story of the Quanah Parker, son of an Indian and a famous white captive is one of the most amazing stories of American History.
