It is finished!

Books Mentioned

  • Death on a Friday Afternoon by Richard John Neuhaus

In the beginning was the Word. So says the gospel of John. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John says in this man was life and the life was the light of men.

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

The great cry from the cross declares the completion of the work begun at the foundation of the world: “It is finished!”

R. J. Neuhaus proclaims: “This is the cross point in the Great Story, from the “In the beginning” of creation to the last words of the Bible, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” At the cross point, everything is retrieved from the past and everything is anticipated from the future, and the cross is the point of entry to the heart of God from who and for whom, quite simply, everything is….No darkness can overcome it for it is the light on the far side of darkness, the life on the far side of death, the everything on the far side of nothing.”

It is not over. But it is finished!

A potsherd, of course, is a piece of broken pottery and is used as a simile in the Bible.
It is also found in this hopeful poem by G. M. Hopkins.
